2026: Outlook and Goals in the New Year
Heading into 2026, Alexander Van Lanschot focus is less about chasing trends and more about deepening the areas that consistently show real-world impact: applied systems, intelligent data use, and technology that connects software logic with physical environments.
That mindset is rooted in his academic foundation at Duke University, where Alexander studied Electrical and Computer Engineering along with Computer Science. Duke’s emphasis on interdisciplinary problem-solving shaped how he thinks about systems as a whole rather than isolated pieces and parts.
One of Alexander’s primary areas of interest moving into 2026 is the continued intersection of embedded systems and intelligent software. His previous project work reflects a curiosity about how computation can live closer to the source: inside devices, sensors, and constrained environments, rather than relying exclusively on cloud abstraction. This includes exploring how data is collected, processed, and acted on in near-real time, especially in systems where efficiency and reliability matter more than pure novelty. He also found the “Embedded Systems for Edge AI: Hardware, Software, and Design Methodologies” research proposal from the University of Texas at Dallas, particularly intriguing as a catalyst for his areas to explore in 2026.
Another theme emerging in his current work is the use of data and AI to better understand large-scale, real-world phenomena. In particular, explainable AI (XAI) trends and advancements piqued Alexander’s interest on what’s to come in 2026. Building on earlier projects involving satellite imagery and environmental analysis, Alexander is interested in how machine learning can support clearer decision-making rather than opaque predictions.
The questions percolate all the time…How can systems be built to be both intelligent and practical? Where does software most meaningfully meet the physical world? and How can engineers remain adaptable as tools evolve? As 2026 unfolds, his work continues to reflect a steady commitment to learning through building, and to letting curiosity, not hype, lead the way.
